Getting out of a payday loan cycle
If most of your paycheque disappears into loan payments the day it lands, you're not alone, and there's more than one way out. Here are the options, from the smallest step to the biggest.

In short
A loan cycle starts when a payday loan comes due in full and you take a new one to repay it. If you owe on one or two small loans, a single installment loan may replace them with smaller payments spread over months. If your debts are bigger than your income can carry, talk to a non-profit credit counsellor first. The first meeting is free and they can set up a debt management plan or explain a consumer proposal.
1. Know exactly what you owe
Write down each loan, the amount left, the payment and the due date. Many people are surprised by the total, in both directions. You need the full picture before choosing a way out, and a counsellor will ask for it too.
2. Replace several payday loans with one installment loan
If your debts are small, one installment loan can pay them off so you're left with a single payment on your payday, spread over 90 to 120 days. It works when the new payment fits your budget and you don't take new payday loans afterwards.
It doesn't work if you'd still be short every payday. Then the new loan becomes one more debt, and the right move is step 3.
3. Ask a non-profit credit counsellor
Accredited non-profit credit counselling agencies help for free, or for a small fee only if you join a plan. A counsellor will go through your budget and your credit report with you and lay out every option, including ones that don't involve borrowing. Credit Counselling Canada lists accredited agencies across the country.
4. A debt management plan
The counselling agency negotiates with your creditors and you make one monthly payment to the agency, which pays them. Interest is often reduced or stopped.
- One lower monthly payment instead of many
- Reduced or no interest, if creditors agree
- A budget built with you, so the cycle doesn't restart
The trade-off: accounts in the plan are usually closed, the plan is noted on your credit report, and creditors don't have to agree.
5. A consumer proposal or bankruptcy
If the debt is too large to repay in full, a Licensed Insolvency Trustee can arrange a consumer proposal, a legal deal to repay part of what you owe, or a bankruptcy. Both stop collection calls and have a serious, lasting effect on your credit. The Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy explains your options when you owe money.
You can't apply for a loan through Loans514 while you're in a bankruptcy or consumer proposal.
Your payday loan rights
In provinces that regulate payday loans, there are rules that help. Ontario, for example, bans rollovers, caps a loan at half your net pay, and requires the lender to offer an extended payment plan after your third loan within 63 days. Rules differ in each province: see your province's guide.
