Installment loans in Nova Scotia

Borrow $300 to $3,000 and repay it in equal amounts on your paydays, over three to four months. Applications with bad credit can still be approved.

The Loans514 team reviewed this page on November 5, 2026. We took the rules from official federal and provincial sources, listed at the bottom. All dollar amounts are examples, for illustration only.

In short

If you're in Nova Scotia and your credit is bruised, you can apply for an installment loan through Loans514. Lenders in our network typically offer $300 to $3,000 over 90 to 120 days at 22% to 32% APR. Lenders other than banks and credit unions need a permit under the province's Consumer Protection Act, and must show the cost in dollars and as an annual rate before you borrow. A Nova Scotia payday loan can cost up to $14 per $100, or $70 on $500, in one payment.

How applying works in Nova Scotia

  1. Send one application. Use a phone or computer, anywhere in Nova Scotia. It takes around five minutes.
  2. A lender gets in touch. Your application goes to lenders in our network. If one can help, it contacts you and asks you to connect your bank through Instant Banking Verification. That's a read-only view of your recent transactions, so you don't send documents.
  3. Read the offer. You see the rate, each fee and your total repayment before you agree to anything.
  4. Get paid. The lender deposits the money after you sign, often on the same day.

Loans514 doesn't lend money. Your rate, fees and payment dates are set by the lender that approves you.

Nova Scotia's rules for installment loans

There are no separate high-cost credit rules in Nova Scotia. But under the Consumer Protection Act, anyone in the business of lending needs a permit, and the province publishes a list of licensed lenders. The Act also protects you:

  • The lender must give you a written statement of the cost of borrowing before you get the credit. It has to show the cost as an annual rate and in dollars and cents.
  • You don't have to pay any cost of borrowing the lender didn't disclose.
  • A lender can't give you credit you didn't apply or ask for.

The federal 35% APR limit covers every installment loan, fees included.

Payday loans in Nova Scotia

  • The Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board sets the limit. Since January 1, 2025, a payday loan can cost no more than $14 per $100 borrowed, with all expenses included.
  • You can cancel until the end of the next business day after the money reaches you. An online loan gives you 48 hours.
  • Lenders can't roll a loan over or charge you for repaying early. They also can't give you a new loan while you still have one outstanding with them.
  • A lender can't ask for security, or make you buy another product, like insurance, to get the loan.
  • If you default, the penalty is capped at $20 per loan. Default interest is capped at 30% on the balance owing.
  • Every payday lender needs a permit, including online lenders. If yours doesn't have one, you only have to repay what you borrowed.

  • A full-time job, or steady income from self-employment

Your income and recent banking matter most to lenders, so a low score on its own won't rule you out. Apply from Halifax, Dartmouth, Sydney, Truro, New Glasgow, Kentville, Bridgewater and Yarmouth, or from anywhere else in Nova Scotia. An application doesn't commit you to anything. You agree to a loan only when you sign a lender's contract.
